Social Security Number

Your nine-digit Social Security number remains your first and continuous link with Social Security. It helps the U.S. accurately record your covered wages.  If you already have a Social Security Number, you will not need to apply for another as this number is assigned for life.

You need a Social Security number to get a job. F-1 students are only eligible for Social Security Number if they have a job offer and if they are allowed to work  On-Campus or through CPT or OPT. Do not carry your card with you. Keep it in a safe place with your other important papers.

To apply for a Social Security Card, you need the following documents:

  • Letter from employer confirming the job offer (off-campus)

  • Letter of support from the International Student Center

  • Most recent I-20

  • Passport

  • I-94

  • SJCC Student ID card

  • Social Security Card Application
