Physics

Physics Overview

We offer a full-range of algebra and calculus-based classes that articulate with the University of California and the California State University.

Faculty and staff in the San José City College Physics Department are dedicated to helping students achieve their educational goals. Classes are held in SJCC’s state-of-the-art Science Complex, taught by dynamic faculty who bring years of teaching and work experience to the classroom.

We invite students to contact the department with any questions or concerns they have.

Peer-Led Learning

Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) is a small-group collaborative approach to learning, studying, and orally communicating chemistry, biology, math and physics. Click on the first link to find out our current semester schedule of PLTL workshops. Students who become peer leaders earn a modest stipend and are offered opportunities to participate in local and national conferences, internships, and more.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

The Physics program at SJCC is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of fundamental physical principles, preparing them for further studies in physics, engineering, or related fields. Courses are held in SJCC's state-of-the-art Science Complex and are taught by dynamic faculty with extensive teaching and industry experience.

SJCC offers a range of physics courses, including:

  • PHYS 002A: Algebra/Trigonometry-Based Physics I: This course covers basic principles such as vectors, Newton's laws of motion, work, energy conservation, momentum, elasticity, thermodynamics, gravitation, fluids, waves, and simple harmonic motion. It is the first of a two-semester sequence intended for students not requiring calculus-based physics.
  • PHYS 002B: Algebra/Trigonometry-Based Physics II: A continuation of PHYS 002A, this course delves into topics like electricity, magnetism, optics, and modern physics concepts. It completes the two-semester sequence for students pursuing non-calculus-based physics studies.

Yes, prerequisites vary by course. For instance, PHYS 002A requires completion of Intermediate Algebra or appropriate placement beyond Intermediate Algebra. It's recommended to consult the SJCC course catalog or speak with an academic advisor to determine specific prerequisites for each course.

The Physics Department at SJCC is committed to helping students achieve their educational goals. Classes are conducted in modern facilities, and faculty members bring years of teaching and professional experience to the classroom, providing a supportive and enriching learning environment.

Students have access to various resources, including:

  • Science Complex: A state-of-the-art facility equipped with modern laboratories and equipment.
  • Experienced Faculty: Instructors with extensive teaching and industry backgrounds.
  • Academic Support: Tutoring services and study groups to assist with coursework.
