Kinesiology
The mission of the Kinesiology and Wellness Department is to promote the goal of health and total well-being to students through the dissemination of knowledge primarily related to physical fitness and its enabling individuals for lifetime activities and wellness. Students will achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness through strategic goal planning. The department provides theory courses for educators and the general community. A Kinesiology AA-T degree is available for students to continue their educational goals.
Athletics
SJCC Athletics is a member of the CCCAA and is comprised of ten intercollegiate teams; Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Golf, Football, Softball, Women’s Volleyball, and Men’s and Women’s Track and Field. Each sports in general spans the length of 1 semester, except both men’s and women’s basketball team whose schedule is split between the Fall and Spring semesters.
In order to be eligible for intercollegiate competition, a student-athlete must be continuously and actively enrolled and attending class in a minimum of 12 units during the season of sport. Of the 12 units, at least 9 shall be attempted in courses counting toward remediation, career technical education/certificate courses, associate degree requirements, transfer/general education, and/or lower division theoretical major preparation courses as defined by the college catalog and/or articulation agreements and be consistent with the student-athlete’s educational plan.
Adaptive Physical Education
A variety of Adapted Physical Education (APE) classes are offered at SJCC for individuals with functional limitations to promote fitness, muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, and independence. The program offers for credit and non-credit weight training, fitness for life, and physical conditioning classes.
