Our Program Philosophy

The San Jose City College Child Development Center provides a quality developmental   pre-school  and toddler program for the children of the San José City College and Evergreen Valley College students as well as faculty and staff members of the college. The program is designed to serve four distinct groups:  Children, student parents, community families and Early Childhood Education (ECE) student interns.
The center strives to recognize each child’s need to grow and develop at his own pace.  They provide an atmosphere that promotes the social-emotional, cognitive, language-communication, physical and creative development of young children.  Activities combine both structured teacher oriented, and unstructured child oriented experiences, which encourage exploration and discovery.  Our aim is to assist each child to reach his full potential by providing the building blocks for successful life experiences.

The San Jose City College Center has implemented a culturally competent curriculum.  This anti-bias approach focuses on dimensions, in which people may vary, such as:  family composition, languages spoken, religious affiliation, or observance of holidays.  In order to respect the diversity of our families, our staff will include aspects of various cultures in their curriculum. As part of our anti-bias approach, parents are encouraged to present or share anything related to their culture and/or a celebration in their child’s classroom. We believe in inclusion in our program because we want all of our families to be acknowledged, accepted, and respected.

Parent Involvement and Resources:
Our Center believes that parents are the first and most important teachers of their children. We regularly convene a parent advisory board to seek parent input and advice about our program. We also know that parenting can be both challenging and rewarding. Our staff is dedicated to supporting parents with workshops, conferences and to share their extensive knowledge of child development. We are committed to working with parents as a team for the best interests of the child. Parents are encouraged and welcome to volunteer in their child’s classroom and to visit at any time.

A Program of Excellence

The San Jose City College Child Development Center is an on-campus laboratory school that provides a high quality, developmentally appropriate toddler and preschool program for young children, who are between the ages of 22 months to 5 years. Our teachers facilitate learning in the areas of early literacy, math, science, writing, art, music, independence, social competence, multicultural appreciation, and physical/motor skill competence, and prepare children for success in kindergarten. The San Jose City College Child Development Center is also a laboratory school where students in the Early Childhood Education program at SJCC conduct observations, student-teach, and receive mentorship and guidance from our excellent team of certificated teachers.

Excellence in Teaching

All children receive a high-quality education because they are taught by a professional, experienced, and talented team of teachers. Our teachers hold professional credentials in Early Childhood Education and have many years of teaching experience in the ECE profession. They are dedicated to providing a safe, educational, fun, and caring environment for all children.
