Computers and Internet Use

Purpose: to provide guidelines for computer use and Internet access in the Library. 

The Library’s computers support a variety of resources, including the online catalog, databases, Internet, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Jaws and other applications.

Procedures:

  • Computers are checked out at the Circulation Counter with a student identification card.
  • There is a two-hour check out period.
  • Students are assigned to the specific computer indicated on the plastic computer plaque issued at the Circulation Counter.  This plaque must be returned, or fines will be charged.
  • Late fees for computers and cables are $.50 per hour (or partial hour).

Rules:

  • Computers are checked out to individuals, not groups.  Group study is not permitted in the Computer Area.
  • No online chatting or computer games are allowed.
  • Children under the age of 18, (who are not enrolled at SJCC), are not permitted to use computers.

Vandalism

  • Tampering with equipment, software, hardware/computer configurations is not permitted.
  • Copying programs, data or documents to the hard disk is not permitted.  Deleting files from the hard drive, or changing the configurations is not permitted. 
  • Any destruction or change to the set up of the hardware or software is subject to disciplinary action by the College.

Copyright - United States Law

  • Software is copyrighted, and may not be copied or reproduced to any electronic medium.  Any attempt to violate copyright laws may result in disciplinary action.

Wireless access

  • A wireless network option is available throughout the library.
  • Instructions for set-up of laptops are found with the information sheet display near the Reference Desk.
  • Cables to connect laptops to the Library’s data ports may be checked- out at the Circulation Counter.  Workstations are located through out the second and third floors. 
  • Library staff is not permitted to work on students’ laptops.  Users must create their own communication set.
