A decade later, an independent San Jose Junior College District was created. In 1958, the name was changed to San José City College.

The District serves 950,000 residents within its 303 square miles, encompassing the San Jose and Milpitas Unified School Districts and East Side Union High School District. Recent voter-approved general obligation bonds have funded the construction of campus buildings that allow San José City College to continue to provide a state-of-the-art learning environment. Facilities completed in 2003 include The Cesar Chavez Learning Resource Center and the landmark five-story Technology Center on the corner of Bascom and Moorpark Avenues that was completed in 2003 .
