Work Experience

Work Experience is designed for students who work or volunteer in a field related to their career major. Students are required to provide evidence that they are enrolled in a career program (e.g., education plan or coursework in a career/technical subject area). Students can earn one unit of credit for each 60 hours of unpaid volunteer time or 75 hours of paid work during the semester. Students can repeat Career/Occupational Work Experience, combined with General Work Experience, or alone, up to a maximum of 16 units. Students who are not employed in their intended career field, but are employed, may enroll in General Work Experience only, which is repeatable to a maximum of 6 units. Internship/job placement is the responsibility of the student, but students may seek assistance in the campus Job Placement Center.

Students are required to submit a new application (pdf) each semester during the first week of school. These may be sent electronically to Pat.Space@sjcc.edu or in paper form to room 308-A. There is an after hours drop box available for student convenience.

Benefits of work experience include the ability to maintain full time student status for financial aid or insurance purposes, reducing hours on campus, ability to improve grade point average, and recognition by your employer for developing new skills.
