San José City College

Accreditation

San Jose City College has launched its Accreditation Self-Study this spring. Please get in touch with the Vice President's (Academic) office to find out how you can participate in this important initiative.

Why should we care about Accreditation?  It’s a process that helps colleges show the public that they have met certain standards to provide quality education. Plus, students who attend a school that has been accredited can easily transfer to other colleges and obtain work in their major field of interest.

Who accredits the college?  San Jose City College (SJCC) is evaluated by The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC), an entity of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and the next review is due in fall 2010.

What’s the process for getting Accreditation?  Accreditation involves a five-step process:

  • The campus conducts a Self-Study. Faculty and staff work on committees to evaluate instruction and services.
  • A team of faculty and staff writes the report and others on campus read it.
  • The college sends the report to the accreditation agency.
  • The agency sends a team of faculty and staff from other colleges to validate the report.
  • The agency grants accreditation or renewal of accreditation.

What goes into an accreditation report? The report includes an assessment of academic excellence, classroom instruction, certificates and degrees, service to students, fiscal responsibility, safety, and workforce readiness. The are four main parts to the report:

  • Standard I: Institutional Mission and Effectiveness
  • Standard II: Student Learning Programs and Services
  • Standard III: Resources
  • Standard IV: Leadership and Governance

How often is the college evaluated? The college goes through a full accreditation process every six years but may be asked to submit a midterm or follow-up report.

How can I participate?  There are many ways you can help with the Self-Study. You can:

  • Join one of the Standards Committees
  • Help evaluate your area of responsibility
  • Help conduct a survey
  • Help disseminate information
  • Help write or read the final report
